UH-1h Standard Operations Training


This syllabus outlines the the training qualification hierarchy of the 229th.

There are 4 qualifications or stages per the two primary aircraft:

  • Basic Wings (BW)
  • Mission Qualified (MQ)
  • Senior Wings (SW)
  • Master Wings


The Objectives and demonstrable Competencies for each designation are outlined below. These training requirements are based on selected "TASKS" from the Uh-1h ATM.

In the sections that follow you will find a link to the corresponding ATM Tasks printed in original form for reference.

To expedite your Basic Wing training, each of the listed competencies and requirements in that section is followed by a breakdown of the relevant ATM Tasks in a concise readable format. Yah, "Cliff Notes"

In time, the same will be offered for Senior Wings, including the Mi-8. Other aircraft depending on demand.

INDUCTION

1. New member induction

Objective: To introduce new members to the 229th AHB training, SOP’s and expectations

2. Basic Wings – Aircraft Start

Objective: Perform an engine start and ready the aircraft for operational flight as per 1024 UH-1h ATM 2007 & 229th SOP.

-Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate

-an understanding of the main aircraft instruments, controls and systems -correct aircraft start-up procedures (not auto-start) -making ready all equipment and systems for operational flight

Objective: Perform a hover power check as per 1028 UH-1h ATM 2007.

Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate bringing his craft to a 5’ stationary hover.

4. Basic Wings – Perform hovering flight.

Objective: Perform hovering flight as per 1038 UH-1h ATM 2007.

Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate -bringing his craft to a stationary hover in ground effect, for 1 minute

-a hovering turn around the masthead maintaining an appropriate rate of turn

-forwards and sideways hovering flight at a speed no faster than a walking pace.

-Taxing from ramp to runway in the hover at a speed similar to a walking pace

-Air taxi flight below 100’ at a safe airspeed for the altitude and conditions

5. Basic Wings – Perform a VMC take-off

Objective: Perform a visual meteorological conditions take-off as per 1040 UH-1h ATM 2007

Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate

-from a hover, smoothly accelerate the aircraft through ETL whilst maintaining an appropriate hover height and desired ground track relative to the conditions

-obtaining and maintaining the desired climb speed (60kts) and rate of climb

6. Basic Wings – Perform VMC flight manoeuvres

Objective: Perform VMC flight manoeuvres as per task 1052 UH-1h ATM 2007

Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate

-climbing and stopping the rate of climb to maintain a stable altitude, speed and direction ± 100’ of desired altitude

-accelerating and de-accelerating airspeed whilst maintaining a stable altitude

-90 degree turns <30 degrees of bank with roll-out ± 10 degrees of desired heading

-decent and ascent at approx 500’fpm with a stable airspeed

-entering in and departing from a traffic pattern

-A runway landing

7. Basic Wings - Perform VMC approach

Objective: Perform VMC approach as per task 1058 UH-1h ATM 2007

Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate

8. Basic Wings – Perform multi aircraft operations

Objective: Perform multi aircraft as per task 2010 UH-1h ATM 2007

Competencies expected: The pilot will

-participate in a formation flight briefing in accordance with 229th SOP

-demonstrate flying in simple trail and staggered right formations in position 2 -demonstrate reacting to loss of visual contact in accordance with the 229th SOP.

MISSION QUALIFIED

Pre-requisite: None – Company Commander discretion
Trainer 9 – MQ: Senior Wings and above
10 – MQ: EMQ or above, Senior Wings ONLY if appointed by Coy Commander

9. MQ – Formation skills

9.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills required to safely pilot the UH-1h in formation flight within a controlled environment (announced turns not exceeding 20 degrees bank and Max VVI not to exceed +/- 500 fpm)

9.2. Competences expected: The Pilot will demonstrate

9.2.1. take off, level flight and a normal landings whilst in trail and staggered right formations.

9.2.2. maintaining loose separation (6-10 RD) and correct stack

9.2.3. flying in positions 2 and 3 in right positioned formations

9.2.4. maintaining position when the flight changes from one formation to another

9.2.5. an awareness of the procedures and actions if the formation receives enemy fire

9.2.6. knowledge of 229th SOP regarding the use of lights, signals and communications in formation flight

10. MQ – Communication Skills

10.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate effectively as a member of a flight and solo if in the vicinity of other aircraft.

10.2. Competences expected: The Pilot will demonstrate

10.2.1. 229th radio application theory, installation & configuration.

10.2.2. UH-1h radio equipment knowledge and operation

10.2.3. knowledge of 229th brevity and standard radio procedures including pre-flight

10.2.4. in-flight frequency changes whilst in formation flight

10.2.5. simultaneously operating radios on 2 separate networks, command and flight

11. Senior Wings - Navigate by Pilotage and dead reckoning

11.1. Objective: Navigate by Pilotage and dead reckoning as per task 1044 UH-1h ATM 2007

11.2. Competencies expected: Using the tools available in DCS, the pilot will plan a route and by pilotage and dead reckoning demonstrate

11.2.1. maintaining orientation within 500m

11.2.2. arrive at check points / destination near to ETA

12. Senior Wings - Running Landings

12.1. Objective: Perform a running landing as per task 1066 UH-1h ATM 2007

12.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate running landings by

12.2.1. selecting a suitable landing area

12.2.2. maintaining ground track alignment with the landing direction

12.2.3. maintaining a constant approach angle clear of obstacles to desired touchdown point.

12.2.4. touchdown aligned with landing direction ± 5 degrees, at / slightly above effective translational lift (ETL).

13. Senior Wings - Select LZ, PUZ & HA reconnaissance

13.1. Objective: Perform recon. of LZ, Pick up area and Holding Areas as per task 2067 UH-1h ATM 2007

13.2. Competencies expected: Using the tools available in DCS, the pilot will demonstrate

13.2.1. map, photo, or visual reconnaissance.

13.2.2. that the landing zone (LZ) is suitable for operations and provide accurate and detailed information to supported unit if applicable.

13.2.3. Visually confirm the LZ suitability on initial approach.


14. Senior Wings - Slope Operations

14.1. Objective: Perform slope operations as per task 1062 UH-1h ATM 2007

14.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate slope operations by

14.2.1. Selecting a suitable landing area.

14.2.2. knowing the slope landing limitations.

14.2.3. maintaining heading ±5 degrees.

14.2.4. maintaining drift ±1 foot until touchdown and then no drift allowed.


15. Senior Wings - Simulated Engine Failure

15.1. Objective: Perform simulated engine failure as per task 1074 UH-1h ATM 2007

15.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate this task at a height above 400’ by

15.2.1. recognising the emergency, determining the appropriate corrective action and performing all immediate action procedures required

15.2.2. selecting a suitable landing area

15.2.3. correctly terminating this manoeuvre as directed by the IP


16. Senior Wings - Terrain Flight De-acceleration

16.1. Objective: Perform terrain flight de-acceleration as per task 2036 UH-1h ATM 2007

16.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate this by

16.2.1. accelerating to a given speed and maintaining a heading alignment with the selected flight path

16.2.2. maintaining the tail clear of all obstacles

16.2.3. decelerating to a given airspeed or to a full stop without climbing significantly


17. Senior Wings - Hover Out of Ground Effect

17.1. Objective: Perform a hover out of ground effect check as per task 1030 UH-1h ATM 2007

17.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate this by

17.2.1. establish a stable hover altitude of 50 feet or above surrounding obstacles whichever is higher

17.2.2. determine if aircraft power and controllability are sufficient for manoeuvres requiring OGE hover power

18. Senior Wings - Sling Loads

18.1. Objective: Perform sling load operations as per task 2048 UH-1h ATM 2007

18.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate this by

18.2.1. ensuring the aircraft will remain within gross weight (GWT) and centre of gravity (CG) limitations.

18.2.2. landing close to a load, manual hook up, determining sufficient power is available, take off and maintain trim flight above 100’ agl

18.2.3. performing a hover and automatic pick-up, take-off and maintain trim flight above 100’ agl

18.2.4. ensuring a constant approach with the load safely clearing obstacles and terminate over the intended point of landing and perform a vertical descent until touchdown with release of an undamaged load

ENHANCED MISSION TRAINING & QUALIFICATION

19. EMT – Advanced Formation Skills

19.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in advanced formation flight activities

19.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate

19.2.1. an awareness of flight leads responsibilities

19.2.2. maintenance of correct position within formations

19.2.3. skills necessary to fly lead position and navigate where necessary

19.2.4. formation flying in NOE, Contour and Low Level modes

19.2.5. maintaining any position, tight, close and loose, Heavy left & right, Vee, Staggered left & right, Echelon left & right

19.2.6. running landings in formation

19.2.7. accurate and effective threat calls using both clock and cardinal / intercardinal points or bearing when receiving fire

19.2.8. effective use of communications and specific brevity terms

19.2.9. a good awareness of gunship tactics used when supporting transport formations


20. EMT – IFR, Night flight & Adverse weather

20.1. Objectives: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills to fly IFR and in adverse weather conditions.

20.2. Competencies expected: The pilot will demonstrate

20.2.1. effective use of NVG when taking off, flying a standard pattern

20.2.2. effective us of NVG in formation flight and simulated operational landings

20.2.3. using cockpit instruments to fly a defined course with 30 degree turns and land at a declared location in low visibility (Min: 800m horizontally & 300’ cloud ceiling)

20.2.4. in winds 35-40 knots, taking off, flying a standard traffic pattern and completing a safe landing

20.2.5. in winds 35-40 knots, in formation, taking off, flying a route which includes NOE, Contour & Low Level modes followed by landing in a restricted LZ

21. Perform normal flying operations whilst wearing Night Vision Goggles

21.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform normal flying operation in darkness whilst wearing night vision googles.

21.2. Competencies expected: During DCS hours of darkness the pilot using night vision googles will demonstrate the successful completion of ANY tasks selected from the Basic or Senior Wings Certification programmes.

22. TASK 1048: Perform fuel management procedures

22.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform fuel management procedures as per task 1048 UH-1h ATM 2007

22.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate

22.2.1. that the required amount of fuel is on board at the time of flight departure

22.2.2. initiating an alternate course of action if the actual fuel consumption varies from the planned value and the flight cannot be completed without the planned use of the required reserve

22.2.3. initiating an in-flight fuel consumption check within 10 minutes after levelling off or entering into the mission profile

22.2.4. computing the fuel consumption rate ±50 pounds per hour and complete the fuel check 15 to 30 minutes after taking the initial readings

22.2.5. monitoring the remaining fuel quantity and the continuing rate of consumption


23. TASK 1010: Prepare performance planning card

23.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to compute the aircraft performance data required to complete a mission as per task 1010 UH-1h ATM 2007

23.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate

23.2.1. that aircraft performance meets mission requirements and aircraft limitations will not be exceeded

23.2.2. that the most accurate performance data CHART can be obtained by using performance charts and ATM – calculations etc

23.2.3. predicted hover torque determined using the conditions forecast for the time of departure

24. TASK 1155: Negotiate wire obstacles

24.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to operationally identify and negotiate wire obstacles as per task 1155 UH-1h ATM 2007

24.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate

24.2.1. locating and estimating the height of wires

24.2.2. determining the best method to negotiate a wire obstacle

25. TASK 1327: Perform low level auto-rotation

25.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform low level auto-rotation as per task 1327 UH-1h ATM 2007

25.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate establishing an entry altitude and airspeed as directed and perform a low level auto-rotation by

28. TASK 2054: Perform fast rope insertion and extraction operations

28.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform fast rope insertion and extraction operations as per task 2054 UH-1h ATM 2007

28.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task the pilot will demonstrate

28.2.1. maintaining entry altitude as directed ±10 feet

28.2.2. maintaining an entry airspeed of 80 KIAS, ±5 KIAS

28.2.3. maintaining a track aligned with landing direction

28.2.4. performing a smooth, controlled termination to a hover over the insertion point

28.2.5. a deceleration attitude not exceeding 30 degrees

28.2.6. Maintaining an appropriate hover height ±5 feet (not to exceed rope height).

29. TASK 2068: Perform shipboard operations

29.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform shipboard operations as per task 2068 UH-1h ATM 2007

29.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate

29.2.1. complying with any arrival and departure instructions

29.2.2. performing a visual meteorological conditions (VMC) approach

29.2.3. entering the landing pattern at 200 ASL

29.2.4. hovering either aft or abeam the ship (infrastructure and circumstances dependent)

29.2.5. a controlled final approach and landing

29.2.6. performing a VMC takeoff

30. TASK 2095: Perform simulated maximum gross weight takeoffs

Task criteria: 
    - Coastal airfield, apron cold start 
    - standard atmospheric pressure set to 101.325 mbar – 29.921 inHg / 760 mmHg temperature 38C
    - Load 2 x 19HE, 2 front Guns, 2 x M60 side gunners & 68% fuel load = 9509lbs / 4013kg

30.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform maximum gross weight takeoffs as per task 2095 UH-1h ATM 2007

30.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate

30.2.1. correctly selecting the type of take off requiring the minimum amount of power to safely complete the manoeuvre

30.2.2. accurately predicting the torque/power required for the manoeuvre

30.2.3. determining the point where the aircraft will enter effective translational lift (ETL) for the type of takeoff being performed

30.2.4. establishing an abort point and reconfirm escape plan determined in the reconnaissance

30.2.5. use of minimum power necessary for the take off

30.2.6. conducting post-task analysis (PTA) after take off

31. TASK 2093: Perform simulated maximum gross weight approach and landings

Task criteria:
   - Coastal airfield, apron cold start

31.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform maximum gross weight approach and landings as per task 2093 UH-1h ATM 2007 2000’ PRESS ATT 30’C 9500LBS

31.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate

31.2.1. determining the approach angle requiring the least amount of power without compromising a viable escape plan

31.2.2. correctly predicting the maximum torque required for the manoeuvre (UH-1H ATM appendix B Torques of Power Management, refers)

31.2.3. manoeuvring as necessary to intercept approach angle

31.2.4. calling out torque, airspeed, and vertical speed on approach

31.2.5. achieving transverse flow shudder (etl)and a speed of 300 feet per minute (FPM) or less within last 50 feet of approach

31.2.6. executing a smooth, controlled termination to the ground or the hover height determined in the reconnaissance

31.2.7. correctly determine wind direction and velocity in the landing zone (LZ) after landing, and perform post-task analysis (PTA)

32. TASK 2125: Perform pinnacle and ridge line operations

32.1. Objective: The pilot will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform pinnacle and ridge line operations as per task 2125 UH-1h ATM 2007

32.2. Competencies expected: Senior Wings certification standards and for this task, the pilot will demonstrate effective pinnacle, ridgeline / shoulder and confined area operations and

32.2.1. on reconnaissance:

32.2.1.1. establish a desired altitude ±100 feet

32.2.1.2. establish a desired airspeed, ±10 KIAS

32.2.1.3. properly perform a continuous reconnaissance

32.2.2. on approach:

32.2.2.1. maintain ground track alignment with the selected approach path with minimum drift

32.2.2.2. maintain a constant approach angle

32.2.2.3. maintain an appropriate rate of closure

32.2.2.4. executing a smooth, controlled termination in the forward, usable one-third of the landing area

32.2.3. on takeoff;

32.2.3.1. perform a hover power check, if required, and complete a before-takeoff check without error

32.2.3.2. perform an airspeed-over-altitude takeoff while maintaining heading ±10 degrees.

32.3. be familiar with all mountain terrain operational considerations

33.1. Objectives:
